A new report published by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory indicates the nation's overall energy consumption dropped in 2009. The chart above (full size here) shows the energy flow to various sectors for each fuel source. When examining the transportation sector, it is evident petroleum still dominates the sector and much of the fuel is "rejected" as the result of energy lost during internal combustion.
Furthermore, only 3% of the natural gas usage nationwide is dedicated to transportation, while 72% of all petroleum supplies are used in the sector. Additionally, despite the increased interest in CNG fueling, petroleum still accounts for 94% of all transportation-related fuel consumption. As the simplified chart below demonstrates (full size here), though domestically produced natural gas is playing a large role in transportation today than in previous decades, there is still ample room for growth.

Fleet and Fuels Magazine recently interviewed Trillium Senior VP Bill Zobel for their Wastecon issue. In the article, Zobel highlighted the importance of smaller compressor packages that deliver "reliable fueling at fair prices."

New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) recently finalized a contract to purchase an additional 135 CNG buses with a purchase option for an additional 340 buses. As the largest transit agency in the country, MTA has served as an influential leader in the transition from diesel to CNG in the transit agency. MTA currently operates an extensive fleet of CNG buses under the New York City Transit Authority (NYCT) and MTA Bus Company.
